A Brief History of Mathematics in Lviv University

 

After its foundation in 1661 , the University had courses in mathematics, and the Sub-Faculty of Mathematics appeared in 1744 (Prof. Faustyn Grodzicki).

The University's research and theoretical work in mathematical fields were led by famous professors.
 
18th-19th centuries  Jozef Liesganig, Ignacy Rain, Piotr Lody, Jan Zemantsek, Franciszek Kodesch, Leopold Schulz von Strsznicki, Ignacy Lemoch, Wawrzynice Zmurko.
Beginning of 20th century  Jozef Puzyna, Jan Rajewski, Waclaw Sierpinski, Zigmund Janiszewski.
After the World War I Hugo Steinhaus, Stanislaw Ruzicnicz, Eustachy Zylinski, Stefan Banach, Wlodzimierz Stozek, Wladyslaw Hikliborc, Pawel Julijusz Schauder, Stefan Kaczmarz, Wladyslaw Orlicz, Herman Auerbach, Stanislaw Mazur, B. Knaster, E. Spilrajn, Stanislaw Saks.
