Why 2008?
This year is a special year for
Lviv topology. In 2008 we celebrate:
- 110 anniversary of the course "Topological Studies" taught by
Jozef Puzyna in Lviv University.
This was one of the first systematic topologial courses taught in the world;
- 120 years since the birthday of the Polish topologists Zygmunt Janiszewski
(1888-1920) and
Stefan Mazurkiewicz (1888-1945) that worked in Lviv University;
- 100 years since the birthday of
Jozef Schreier (1908-1943) who worked in Lviv University and in 1925-27 introduced the notion of a topological group;
- 100 years since the habilitation of Waclaw Sierpinski
(1882-1969) in Lviv University;
- 70 years since obtaining Doctor Honorius Causa by Henri Lebesgue (1875-1941) in Lviv University;
- 50 years since the birthday of Michael Zarichnyi, the head of the chair of Geometry and Topology and the dean of the
Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Lviv National University;
- 40 years since the birthday of Taras Banakh, a professor of the chair of Geometry and Topology of Lviv National University
- 5 years since creating the chair of Geometry and Topology on the base of the former chair of Algebra and Topology in Lviv National University.
