Department of Algebra and Topology was founded in 1981 year within the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics. In more then 20 years history the Department reached the peak of its activity and was the key seat in the branch for the entire Western Ukraine. It has established and maintains close contacts with many ukrainian and foreign universities. Professional links were established with scientists from Austria, Belarus, Canada, France, Germany, Hungary, Moldova, Poland, Russia, USA. Many international algebraic conferences were organized by the Lviv University and the Department of Algebra & Topology.

In compliance with the resolution of the University Council of 30th September 2003 the Department of Algebra and Topology was reorganized, and two separate departments were formed: the Department of Algebra and Logic and the Department of Geometry and Topology.

The Department of Algebra and Logic provides teaching of math courses at Mech.& Math. and Applied Math.&Informatics Faculties of the University. The graduates of the Department receive the speciality: "7.080101 - Mathematics. Teacher."; together with the additional specialization in "Algebra and Number Theory" or "Discrete Mathematics and Theoretic Foundations of Informatics". The staff of the Algebra & Logic Department has a wide spectrum of the scientific interests, which are discussed at algebraic seminar. The Department also provides the investigations on the scientific projects of the faculty and works on the improving educational process and preparing of the text books and manuals. The post-graduate students of Algebra and Logic Department make the PhD theses of the speciality "01.01.06 - Algebra and Number Theory".

IV International Algebraic Conference in Ukraine August 4-9, 2003, Lviv.
The Conference is organized jointly by the Lviv Ivan Franko National Univ., Kyiv Taras Shevchenko National Univ., Pidstryhach Institute for Applied Problems of Mechanics and Mathematics National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Deadline for applications: April 15, 2003.
FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT

  • Proceedings of Algebra and Topology Department's meeting on the occasion of its 20 years anniversary are publishing in special issue of Visnyk Lviv Univ.

  • The last meeting of the Department of Algebra and Topology was in Tuesday, 21 January 2001.

  • The first meeting of the Department of Algebra and Logic will be in February 2003.
