Short Historical Survey

Associate Professor V.Dmytruk was the first Head of the Department of Journalism and (from 1954) Dean of the newly-founded Faculty. Among the Faculty lecturers of the time were Ya.Biloshtan, V.Boyanovych, I.Doroshenko, D.Panteleyev, Yo.Tsiokh.

For a long time there had been only one department at the Faculty. In 1972 the Department was reorganized into that of the History of Journalism and that of the Theory and Practice of the Press. The Department of the Language and Stylistics originated later on.

The deans of the Faculty were Associate Professors V.Dmytruc, Ya.Biloshtan, V.Boyanovych, D.Hryhorash, M.Nechytaliuk, P.Yashchuk, Yo.Tsiokh, V.Zdoroveha.

More than 4,000 specialists working in Ukraine and abroad have graduated from the Faculty over the years of its functioning. Among the graduates worthy of mention are the Winners of the State Prize of Ukraine .Ya.Hoyan, V.Maniak, V.Pylypyuk, R.Fedoriv, prominent journalists, culture workers, directors of TV and Radio companies, publishing houses; people’s deputies.

More than 50 graduates have recieved their Candidate, degrees 10 - those of Doktor.

offers the following specializations: “Literary Work in the Press and Agencies of Information”, “ Journalist’s Work on Television”, “ Journalist’s Work on the Radio”, “International Journalism”, “Editing and Publishing”.

The Faculty of Journalism trains specialists for the mass media, agencies of information, press services, institutions and organizations, advertizing agencies. There are two forms of studying at the Faculty: Full-Time Department and Correspondence (Part-Time) Department. Two types of entrance examinations are active: creative competition on the basis of publications or a broudcast/telecast speech with an interview and testing with the consideration of an aptitude for worc of a journalist.

Beginning with the third year, students take their specialization in the following fields: “Literary Work in the Press and Agencies of Information”, “ Journalist’s Work on Television”, “ Journalist’s Work on the Radio”, “International Journalism”, “Editing and Publishing”.

The teachers of the chair give lectures in general theoretical and historical journalistic disciplines, providing the specialization in the field of the periodical press, the work in the information agencies and the press services.

According to the curriculum, the teachers of the department run: practical training of students: - research (I year), production (II year), production with the specialization of “Literary work in the press and agencies of information”

(III year), before diploma and diploma ones (specialization “Literary work in the press and agencies of information”) (IY year), research and graduation papers (specialization “Literary work in the press and agencies of information”.)

The Department of Radio- and Telecasting

The teachers of the Department offer the folloving specializations “A Journalist’s Work on Television” and “AJ ournalist’s Work on the Radio” for the 3rd , 4th, 5th -years-.students

The theoretical knowledge is consolidated by the students during the preparation of radio and television programmes in the radio and television studios of the Department, practical training in the broad- and telecasting-editorial, offices in laboratory classes and in the individual creative laboratories as well.

Classes are also held in two branches of the Department functioning in the L’viv Broadcasting Company and on Radio Independence.

The teachers of the Department run the practical training for 3rd -, 4th-, 5th year students, who specialize in tele- and broadcasting; supervise the research and diploma papers whose the specializations are “ A Journalist’s Work on Television” and “A Journalist’s Work on the Radio”.

 The Department of the Foreign Press and Information

The Department provides training for journalists working in the international departments of Ukrainian newspapers, radio and television, report stations and bureaus of the Ukrainian mass media and informational centres abroad, Radio Liberty, cultural and political centres of other states in Ukraine.

The teachers of the Department run the practical training for 3rd , 4th , 5th year students who specialize in International Information. They also as supervise research and diploma papers.

Special Courses:

 Practice Training

To consolidate the theoretical knowledge and acguire the practical skills of professional work, students of the faculty undergo individual learning and practical training in the editor offices of newspapers, information agencies, tele- and broadcasting companies, both national and local, down to the district level.

Learning practice, I year - 1 month
Practical training, II year - 1.5 months
Practical training, III year - 1.5 months
Practical training before the defence of a diploma paper, Y year - 2 months

State certification

The graduates are certified in accordance with the requirements of the curriculum. The students take state examinations in the Theory and Practice of Journalism and Political Science. They also defend their diploma papers following which the qualifications of Journalist with the major in Journalism are conferred on them.

Upon graduation the students for Master’s Degree receive “Master of Journalism” diplomas.

The Special Faculty of Journalism (Dean - Associate Professor M.Yatsymirs’ka) has been organized under the In-Service Training Institute, Ivan Franko State University in L’viv, Ukraine. The duration of studies is 2.5 and 3.5 years. Upon graduation the respective qualifying diplomas are awarded.
