Palynological studies of the Late Pliocene coal-bearing deposits in the Tran-scarpathians made enable the characterization of plant cover composition and it’s changes during the formation of the lower and upper horizons of coal-bearing strata and to define some climatic parameters for the Late Pliocene (Levantinian) period. At that time the climate was warm and humid. Relatively minor oscillations of the temperature and humidity during the Levantinian were the result of the influence of biotic and abiotic factors. During that time in the Transcarpathians the volcanic activity was the main local abiotic climate forming factor.
Key words: Late Pliocene, palynocomplex, plant cover, volcanism, climate, abiotic climate forming factor, Transcarpathians.

Numerous observations on stratigraphical distribution of various species of mollusks prove that the Sarmatian Sea was not a closed one, but was connected with the Mediterranean Tethys by channels. It has experienced the global sea level changes due to global climate oscillations. Basing upon this conception, a detailed geological history of the Moldovan part of Sarmatian Sea was elaborated. The observed stratigraphical changes in faunal composition are explained as a result of immigration and recurrence.
Key words: Sarmatian basin history; Republic of Moldova.
