The Sorry State of Scholarly Publishing in History: Two Examples
During the raid twentieth century there was increased interest in
Georgii of Drohobicz (1450-1494), the first known Ukrainian author of a
published book. I. Isaevych published his bélles-léttres biography in 1966, and
in 1988 in Bologna Haissa Pessina Longo published a plagiarized version of this
book in Italian. Two recent facsimiles and translations of Drohobicz's works
(Drohobych, 2001; Kharkiv, 2002) are sloppy non-scholarly publications, and
stand as examples of an all too widespread decline in scholarly standards in
academic publishing today in Ukraine.
